Few Philodendron species are as elegant as P. patriciae when it reaches adulthood. When young it is quite ordinary, but as it matures a magical transformation occurs, the leaves begin to droop gracefully downwards and acquire wavy edges. The matte surface on the upper side contrasts beautifully with the shiny underside.

Botanical description

Philodendron patriciae was first described in 2010 by the renowned botanist Thomas Croat and comes from the region between Quibdó and Lloró in Colombia's Chocó province. As an epiphyte in nature, it climbs up trees with short trunks that attach themselves with aerial roots at each node.

The narrow, lanceolate leaves can grow impressively large, up to almost a metre long but only 6-19cm wide, giving them an elegant proportion. With age, the leaves develop a "ribbed" texture and hang gracefully downwards on their long petioles.

Care

To achieve the beautiful hanging shape and long leaves, you need a good plant support. A moss pole is the best.

In addition, it needs to be in bright indirect light. High humidity (60-80% as in the climate of Chocó) prevents brown leaf edges. Normal room air is about 50% and is usually sufficient to maintain the beautiful appearance of the leaves.

P. patriciae needs a well-drained, airy soil mix, such as our aroid soil. Temperatures between 20-26°C are good.

As an epiphyte, the plant appreciates drying slightly between waterings.
