Peperomia graveolens 'Ruby Glow' is a cultivated form of Peperomia graveolens, a succulent-leaved species native to the dry forest regions of southern Ecuador. In the wild, the species grows in well-drained, rocky soils where it receives bright, filtered light and periodic rainfall.
This compact plant forms short, upright stems densely lined with thick, canoe-shaped leaves. The upper leaf surface is glossy green, while the undersides and edges are a rich ruby-red, creating a striking bicolour effect. The succulent foliage stores water, enabling the plant to tolerate drier indoor conditions compared to many other peperomias.
Flowering produces slender, tail-like inflorescences bearing tiny yellowish flowers, though the plant is mainly cultivated for its foliage. Its modest size and tolerance of lower watering frequency make it well suited to windowsills, desks, or small container groupings.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates some direct morning sun.
- Water: Allow the top half of the mix to dry before watering; avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is sufficient.
- Media: Use a free-draining succulent or cactus mix with added organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted fertiliser for succulents.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18–27 °C; protect from temperatures below 15 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes pot-bound.
